Many strange revelations!! August, 1879

Friday, 1 August. Nini, Margo and Sproesser left together for Dresden this morning at light. I did not get up to see them off, having passed a sleepless night. Nini will remain a day in Dresden & leave Margo with Natalie. Sproesser goes, I believe, on to Strasburg where he is stationed for perhaps a year or two to come. This afternoon two lady friends came from Pirna in a carriage to see Miss Lemcke. Mr. Hoffmann & Mr. Collard went with Gredel, Elsa, Henry & Edgar to the Schneeberg and reached home at 7 P.M. Hoffmann & Collard made their appearance—after having changed their toilettes, and staid to supper. Good supper & May-bowle. Baptized the Margaretha Villa! After supper & after the departure of the two ladies from Pirna, we walked in the moonlight with the gentlemen—Mr. Hoffmann in a talking vein and made me a great many strange revelations!!

Sunday, 3 August. Gredel sang at the Kurhaus. Supped at Gast-haus and took a long walk to the Abend-banc afterwards in the moon-light with Hoffmann.

Monday, 4 Aug. Gredel left for Leipzig at 3.30 P.M. Tante Gretchen drove to Königstein with her and found v. Laffert, Markowsky and Hoffmann at the depot, the two former to see Gredel off and the last leaving on the same train. The two officers came back to the Villa Margaretha with Tante Gretchen and found us all in the greatest negligée [disarray]. We dressed and all sat awhile under the trees in the forest and made grass wreaths, then continued our promenade through Rosenthal where we took supper at the Gast-haus. Afterwards sat in the moonlight at the Abend-banc and came home at 10.30. The gentlemen then said good night & adieu with many hopes of aufwiedersehen [until we meet again]. Both gents are civil—Laffert looked too sweet & young.

Thursday, 7th August. Mamie, Nini, Henry, Edgar and I left Schweizermühle at 2.30 P.M. and took the train at Königstein for Berlin. Had a compartment quite to ourselves and the journey passed quickly. Reached Berlin at 9.30 P.M. and drove to 73 Grossbeerenstr. where we found a telegram awaiting us from Mama saying she would be in Berlin tomorrow morning at 7 A.M. Emilie prepared a nice supper for us.

Friday, 8 August. Berlin. All were at the station to meet Mama who arrived at 7 A.M. Thank GOD! Mama looking well. Drove to Herr v. Kährn’s, 6 Grossburenstr. where Mama had the same rooms she had when she was here before. Breakfast awaiting us in the salon. How very very happy we all were! And how we talked and laughed! Mama then went to her trunks and showed us all her lovely bonnets and dresses—also hats—for us.

Nini, Mamie, Edgar and I went back to 73 Grossbeerenstr. to take dinner and give Mama time to sleep a little and at 4 we all took a walk in the Thiergarten [Berlin’s largest park]. I slept at Lemckes, with Nini, Mamie and Edgar but will sleep at Kährn’s hereafter to be nearer Mama.

[A note is pasted to the page with the caption: "Note enclosed with the sweet little pin M.G.C. sent me by Mama." The note is addressed "Ada," and reads: "This little pin has for some reason reminded me of you, ‘ma petite [my little one].’ Accept it with the love you know is yours. I would it was more worthy of your acceptance & the love more acceptable to you. Ever your friend. M.G.C. 4/27 ’79."]

Wednesday, 13 August, 1879. En Voyage. Mama, Henry, Mamie and I left Berlin this morning at 9 A.M. and Edgar came with us to the depot. Met the maid servant, Anna, at Dresden who came to take Mamie back to Schweizermühle, but as our train passed through Königstein, Mamie was able to remain with us until we reached Königstein where Tante Gretchen met us, having come to meet Mamie. Mamie then left us and, soon after, our baggage was examined at Badenbach, the Bohemian frontier. Reached Carlsbad at 8.45 P.M. and stopped at Hotel Goldenes Schild where we had written for rooms.

Thursday, 14th August, 1879.  Carlsbad. [Today, Karlovy Vary, in the Czech Republic] We moved to an apartment on first floor in Austria House—very clean & comfortable and near the Promenade. Received letters from Messrs. L’Adlerberg and de Bodisco.

Monday, 18 August. Commenced drinking Franzembad Eger water and taking the Sanetorium baths. Two glasses of water every day and a bath at 24 degrees [Centigrade, 76 degrees Fahrenheit] every day of the week except Wednesday and Sunday.

Saturday, 23 Aug. Adeline made her appearance this morning after breakfast, having arrived last night & spent the night at the Goldenes Schild.

Sunday, 31 Aug. Mrs. Petica Kretzschmer and her father came up and spoke to us while we were eating supper at Pupps and we talked for about 20 minutes. [The Grandhotel Pupp was recently referred to by Condé Nast Traveler as "the best hotel in town—one of the best in the history of Europe." A favorite watering hole of the glitterati of the last two centuries, Pupp has played host to everyone from Bach to Bernstein, and Peter the Great to Gregory Peck.]
